Abstract

Climate change mitigation and the drive to net zero are the main agendas for many governments in the world, including Asean countries. Many Asean countries has committed to achieve Net Zero status by 2050, while ensuring their economy and citizens continue to prosper healthily. Transport sector is one of the biggest emission producers with about 310 million tons of CO2. Diesel engines are the major contributor in the overall transport emissions, especially in many developing Asean countries where old diesel engines are still operational. Diesel engines also produce other emissions such as particulate matters, nitrogen oxides and smoke. These are damaging to human health, resulting in chronic respiratory and cardiovascular deceases, and even cancer. Thus, it is paramount to address and mitigate emissions from diesel engines, which mainly operates in heavy duty sector. Hydrogen as a fuel, is proposed as one of the possible solutions to reduce and mitigate emissions from diesel engines. However, the use of hydrogen as a fuel in engines requires research and development for performance, safety, reliability as well as its supply chain. This lecture will deliver some high level views as well as details of on-going research work.
